Pregnancy and prenatal development: pregnancy- physical condition in which a woman"s body is nurturing or developing embryo or fetus, prenatal development or gestatuin- process that transforms a zygote into a newborn. The mother"s experience: pregnancy is usually divided into trimesters- three periods of three months. Critical to prevent congential anomalies, because the baby"s organs form during first 8 weeks. Can identify maternal conditions (std) that may threaten prenatal development. Women encouraged to stay away from drugs/alcohol. Can be impotartant to preg lady"s health (for example, in a small number of cases, a zygote implants in one of the fallopian tubes instead of in the uterus, a condition called ectopic pregnancy. Early surgical removal of the zygote is critical to the woman"s future ability to have children). 15% of pregnancies end in miscarriage, or spontaneous abortion: medical care is always necessary after a late-term miscarriage because the woman"s body may fail to completely expel the embryo.
