Volunteering as leisure: volunteering and leisure share common characteristics, both based on activities that are freely chosen, primarily intrinsically motivated and can provide individual benefits such as self-actualization and increased self-esteem. Identify of an activity as leisure is subjective thus not everyone thinks volunteering as leisure. Informal volunteering any unpaid work a person undertakes on his/her own to support another: 77% canadians do informal volunteering. A profile of canada" volunteer involvement in volunteering by individuals is influenced by a variety of factors including gender, age, marital status, household status, education, employment status and income. How do volunteers contribute: mostly contribute their time to 5 major types of organizations. In 2000 nsgvp more than of all volunteers (57%) reported that they helped organize or supervise events or activities for an organization. Other activities that reported high participation included: sitting as a board member (41%) & providing assistance in an organization (30%)
