The first system is general and involves those processes of the immune system that are present at birth: fast-acting, non-specific, short duration, innate. The second type of immunity begins to develop after birth: recognize specific pathogens, learned. Allergies are your immune system attacking what it considers a pathogen. Some of them migrate to the thymus and develop into t-cells. Both t and b cells require prior exposure to the pathogen to produce an immune response. Other natural killer cells do not require prior exposure and form a first line of defense. From evolutionary perspective, feeling ill is protective because it would result in withdrawal from dangerous situations as well as allow for rest. Psychoneuroimmunology is the study of how psychological factors can influence the immune system. Eat less, depression, less aggressive, want to be alone. If a friend is present, you experience less stress than when you perform a task alone.
