Document Summary

Chapter 6: using personality traits to understand behaviour. Why measure traits: to predict behaviour, to understand behaviour. The single-trait approach examines the link between personality and behaviour by asking, what do people like that do: (cid:862)that(cid:863) refers to an important personality trait. The essential-trait approach addresses the difficult question, which traits are the most important: tries to narrow the list to those that really matter. Some really do vary in their inner and outer selves and in how they perform in different settings: high self-monitors, adjust behavior according to the situations. Others are largely the same outside as they are inside, and do not vary much from one setting to another: low self-monitors, consistent across situations. High self-monitors are described more favourably and are more popular than low-self monitors. High self-monitors look to the environment for cues to how they are feeling, whereas low self-monitors are more prone to look within.
