Chapter 5 intellectual disability (intellectual developmental disorder) Intellectual disability took over term mental retardaion in dsm 5. Intellectual disability is a neuropsychological disorder, onset in developmental period, impariments in social, personal, academic or occupaional funcioning. Id is characterized by signiicant limitaion in mental abiliies (reasoning, planning, judgment) that result in impairments in adapive funcioning, such as conceptual, social and pracical skills needed to fulil aspects of everyday life. Looked at in the context of what is normal in the persons peers and culture. Evoluionary degeneracy theory atributed the intellectual and social problems of children with id to regression to an earlier period in human evoluion. Eugenics francis galton the science which deals with all inluences that improve the inborn qualiies of a race , society had to be protected by presumable harm done by these people. Binet and simon were asked to come up with a way to idenify children who might need special help in school.
