Written language; written expression, spelling, and handwriting (ch. Young children should not be required to adhere to criteria of proper form or correct spelling (encouraged to explore and to play with writing: early writing = increases child"s awareness of phonological properties of language. The writing process: traditional writing product approach: Teacher"s checking and grading of the written product is based on certain expectations of perfection. Students expected to spell correctly, to use adjectives, and to composed topic sentences. Written papers graded on word choice, grammar, organization, and ideas. Students expected to learn through corrections/feedback to improve their writing skills from these grades and teacher corrections. People learn to dislike writing: the writing process approach: Emphasizes thinking that goes on during writing. Teachers are encouraged to understand the complexity of the writing process as they help students think about, select, and organize tasks. Writer gathers ideas + refines them before beginning formal writing.
