Habituation: baby looks at a pattern intently at first, then look at it less as time passes. Dishabituation: if a new pattern is substituted for the old one, infants immediately increase their looking time. Gaze following: infants regularly watch the eyes of a nearby person. Object permanence: the principle that objects continue to exist when out of view. Infants prefer novel stimuli as demonstrated by the fact that they look at them longer. Assimilation: the process by which new experiences are incorporated into existing schemes, adding knowledge to what you already know.
