Document Summary

Chapter 9 part 3 fundamental and realized niches. The fundamental niche reflects the environmental requirements of species, while the realized niche also includes interactions with other species. In chapters 5 8, we discussed how individual factors such as temperature, water availability, and food resources can have significant implications for the evolution and ecology of organisms. Although species vary greatly in their adaptations to these environmental factors, one commonality is that most adaptations require energy. A common theme through the chapters of section ii has been the principle of allocation, in which allocation of energy to one aspect of the energy budget means there is less energy to allocate for other uses. This idea is a unifying concept in ecology, and is never more apparent than in discussions of life histories and the niche. The word niche has been in use a long time.
