Document Summary
Notice how the following paragraph . (page 20) In the united states, the disability rights movement began in the 1970s after the civil rights and women"s rights movements. The goal of this movement was to improve the quality of life for people with disabilities. Before this time, many americans would discriminate against the disabled. They believed that people with disabilities were not able to contribute to society. The disabled had to change the belief that their lives were worth less than others" lives. One of the first changes they fought for was easy access to buildings, public streets, and public transportation. The physically disabled could not use many public spaces until wheelchair ramps and elevators were added. In addition to the physical environment, equal opportunities in employment, education, and housing were necessary. Because of the success of the disability rights movement, disabled people are supposed to have the same opportunities as all others in society today.
