ENGL109 Chapter 1-2: Notes #1 The Shallows
Document Summary
The shallows: what the internet is doing to our brains. Print: our isolated, fragmented selves, locked for centuries in the private reading of printed pages, were becoming whole again, merging into the global equivalent of a tribal village . I find the idea of web based global village to be a wildly generous description of the internet. Although the internet does bring people together on in a lot of ways, the only binding commonality is the computer itself. Even if we were to describe the internet as a community" there is so much hate and controversy to be found on the internet that members of this community could not claim to be united on anything. The internet takes away the necessity for people to draw their own conclusions. Why think for yourself when you have a convenient device that will tell you what you think in a matter of seconds: the medium is the message. " .
