Document Summary

The problem with being multicellular is that you are very high. Only the surface layer is in contact with the environment. We require nutrients and oxygen from the environment. Rate of diffusion of oxygen and nutrients is limited by distance. We overcome this diffusion limitation by: cardiovascular system for transport of substances through the body, transported by flow of blood though circulatory system, bulk flow rather than diffusion. From external to tissues: nutrients, water, gases (o2) From tissues to external environment: metabolic wastes, gases (co2), heat- major material transported is oxygen. The brain is the most oxygen dependent organ in the human body. 5-10 seconds of interrupted blood flow = loss of consciousness. 5-10 min interrupted blood flow = permanent brain damage. Vessels that carry blood away from the heart = arteries. Vessels that carry blood towards the heart =veins. System of valves keeps blood moving in one direction. Between arteries and veins are network of capillaries.
