Biol 273-chapter 18: gas exchange and transport notes. Hypoxia: a condition in which the body or a region of the body is deprived of adequate oxygen supply at the tissue level. Hypercapnia: a condition of abnormally elevated carbon dioxide(co2) levels in the blood. Pulmonary edema: excessive interstitial fluid volume in the lungs. Solubility: the ease with which a molecule or gas dissolves in a solution: the more easily a substance dissolves, the higher its solubility. Fick equation: diffusion through a membrane is directly proportional to the surface area and concentration gradient. Percent saturation of hemoglobin: the amount of oxygen combined with hemoglobin in proportion to the amount of oxygen the hemoglobin is capable of carrying. It is expressed as a percentage of a ratio: content/capacity. Oxyhemoglobin saturation curve: a curve that plots the proportion of hemoglobin in its saturated (oxygen-laden) form on the vertical axis against the prevailing oxygen tension on the horizontal axis.
