U2c8 (textbook) neurons: cellular and network properties. Neurons have a single process called the axon, Have 2 relatively equal fibers extending off the central cell body. Single long axon may branch several times and end at enlarged axon terminals. Peptides are synthesized on rough er and packaged by golgi apparatus. Fast axonal transport walks vesicles and mitochondria along microtubule network. Mechanically gated ion channels found in sensory neurons and open in response to physical forces such as pressure or strength. Chemically gated ion channels in most neurons respond to a variety of ligands, such as extracellular neurotransmitters and neuromodulators or intracellular signal molecules. Voltage-gated ion channels respond to changes in cell"s membrane potential, play important role in initiation and conduction of electrical signals along axon. The nervous system is a complex network of neurons that form the rapid control system of the body. Emergent properties of the nervous system include consciousness, intelligence, and emotion.
