Job performance
- Using results to indicate job performance was create problems as: employees go beyond
bottom line results and evaluating their performance just based on results alone might
give an inaccurate picture of the employees worth to the organization.
- Second: Managers focus on bottom line results can create a bottom line
mentality in employees which in turn results in SOCIAL UNDERMINING – sabotaging co-
workers, reputations or trying to make them look bad.
- Third: results are influenced by factors beyond the employees control – product
quality, competition, equipment, technology, budget constraints etc.

- Job performance – the value of the set of employee behaviors that contribute, either
positively or negatively to organizational goal accomplishment.

2.2 What Is task performance?
- Task performance – employee behaviors that are directly involved in the transformation
of organizational resources into the goods or services that the organization produces. It
is a set of explicit obligations that an employee must fulfill to receive compensation and
continued employment.

- Ex. A flight attendant must include and demonstrate safety procedures and
check the aircraft.
- Routine task performance – well-known or habitual responses to demands that occur in

- Behaviors involved in adaptability: handling emergency situations, stress,
solving problems creatively, dealing with uncertain/unpredictable situations.
- Creative task performance – degree to which individuals develop ideas or physical
outcomes that are both novel and useful.
