Document Summary

Like charges repel one another, and unlike charges attract one another. Electrical forces between objects arise when those objects have net negative or positive charges. Objects become charged by gaining or losing electrons. Negative charge is transferred from one object to the other. Quantized: charge occurs in discrete chunks that can"t be further subdivided. In conductors, electrical charges move freely in response to an electric force. Semiconductors: a third class of materials; their electrical properties are somewhere between those of insulators and those of conductors. In charging by conduction, the object being charged is always left with a charge having the same sign as the object doing the charging. Grounded means the object connected to a conducting wire or copper pipe is buried in the earth. Induction: the process of charging of a conductor. Charging an object by induction requires no contact with the object inducing the charge.
