HSC 350 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Anterior Spinal Artery, Posterior Spinal Artery, Superior Sagittal Sinus
Document Summary
Delivery of oxygen, glucose and other nutrients. The cerebrovasculature are only ~2% of total body weight. It consumes ~20% of the o used by the whole body. Arterioles constrict when systemic blood pressure is raised and dilate when it is lowered. Functional hyperemia: is the basis for modern imaging techniques (bold). Scanning rapid changing o2 & glucose metabolism & byproducts. Arterial system of the brain feeding arteries (4 artery system) Receives arterial supply from three small longitudinally running arteries: the anterior spinal artery and, two posterior spinal arteries. Occlusion of anterior spinal artery may produce paraplegia, loss of bladder and bowel control, and bilateral thermoanesthesia and analgesia. Blood supply of the brain is divided into arterial territories: middle cerebral arteries (mca) has superior and inferior divisions of cortical branches. Takes an indirect course through the lateral sulcus, along the insular cortex, and over the inner opercular surface of the frontal, temporal and parietal lobes.
