Single case experiments were developed from a need to determine whether an experimental manipulation had an effect on a single research participant. Single case experimental design: a research design in which the effect of the independent variable is assessed using data from a single participant. The participant behavior is first measured during a baseline control time period: baseline: in a single case design, the participant"s behavior during a control period before introduction of the manipulation. The manipulation is then introduced during a treatment period, while the participants behavior is still being observed. The main problem in single case experiments is how to determine that the treatment had an effect on the dependent variable. It may be extended by adding a second introduction of the treatment.
