NURS 3280 Chapter Notes - Chapter 33: Tension Headache, Progressive Muscle Relaxation, Thyroid
Document Summary
Teach how to change behaviour to alter responses to stress in order to relieve muscle tension, pain, gi discomfort, and sleep problems. Stress response can cause feelings that cause producion of chemicals that cause a physiological change: increased hr/rr/metabolism rate/bp, ight muscles, irritability, dilated pupils, stronger cardiac contracions, increased blood glucose/serum, cholesterol. If long term stress this can lead to angina, tension headaches, cardiac arrhythmias, pain or ulcers. Relaxaion reduces neural impulses sent to brain, reducing brain acivity that causes stress responses. Includes focus: idenify, difereniate and return atenion to a certain simulus. Includes passivity: ability to stop unnecessary analyical acivity. Reduces physical tension focusing on diferent muscle groups, contracing and relaxing. Teaching to relax muscle groups without irst contracing them. Imagining warmth and relaxaion lowing through muscle groups while deep breathing. For people who ind discomfort/get ired with acive muscle contracing. Relaxaion can lower hr and bp, decrease muscle tension, reduce anxiety, help with ptsd.
