It has been blamed on: the emergence of nation-states, universalist ideologies, on technologies. 20th century wars were so destructive because they fought with machine guns, artillery, bombers, freeing soldiers from natural inhibitions against face to face combat and allowing them to kill large numbers of faceless enemies without mercy. Set in the late 2nd millennium bce but written 500 years later. The bible depicts a world that is staggering in it savagery. These events are neither isolated or obscure.
