Introduction to police in canada chapter 7 notes: Predisposition theory argues people who want to be police have certain traits such as cynicism, and authoritarianism. These traits evident before becoming police officer, and it effects their decision making. Socialization is second category of police behaviour theory. Police learn values and norms of policing by process of formal socialization. Now widely held that this process of formal and informal socialization into the police subculture has greatest effect on police behaviour and decision making. 3 important factors: goals, tactics and presence. Avoiding physical injury by being future oriented and by deciding when. Avoiding provocation, could result in angry public reaction appropriate to use critical sanctions. There are various approaches and solutions for problem encountered. 3 stages of police-citizen interaction: contact, processing, and exit. Police officers have great deal of discretion. Learn by their own experience and from colleagues what works and what doesn"t. Policing doesn"t involve doing something, but being something.
