Georg simmel, the metropolis and mental life (1903) The deepest problems of modern life flow from attempt of individual to maintain independence/ individuality of his existence against sovereign powers of society, weight of historical heritage & external culture/ technique of life. Represents most modern form of conflict, which primitive man must carry on with nature for own bodily existence. 19th cen sought to promote, in addition to man"s freedom, his individuality (which is connected with the division of labor) & achievements (unique and indispensable) but make him much more dependent on complementary activity of others. Socialism found the same, suppression of competition but each of these same fundamental motive was at work, namely resistance of individual to being leveled, swallowed up in social-technological mechanism. Examines body of culture w/ reference to the soul, concerning metropolis today answer will require investigation of relationship, social structure promotes between individual aspects of life & those which exceed existence of single indiv.
