SOC 2700 Chapter Notes - Chapter 9: Class Conflict, Differential Association, Ruling Class
Document Summary
Conlict theories: share the assumpion that socieies are more appropriately characterized by conlict than by consensus. View consensus as a temporary state of afairs that will either return to conlict or will have to be maintained at great expense. Pluralist versions: society is composed of diferent groups struggling to see their interests maintained, therefore conlict occurs. Class-conlict versions: argue two classes are present in society, both of which are atemping to dominate that society. Assume conlict emerges between groups atemping to exercise control over paricular situaions or events. The amount of inluence a group will have is the product of the resources the group has available. When culture is homogeneous, values and norms are the same for all. Single set of rules are called conduct norms (focus is on normaive consensus ) Dominant group in society translates its conduct norms into laws. Conlict occurs between diferent cultural or ethnic groups (groups with diferent conduct norms)
