Understands the definition of crime to be factual and precise. Crime is an intentional act in violation of the criminal law that is subject to penalization by the state (tappan) Laws = customs & beliefs that become codified into legal statutes . Criminologist goals = analysis of the rule breakers in society (why they break the law) Cesare lombroso (1911) > criminal physical appearance. Cleckley (1964) > lack the ability to feel shame or guilt. Gottfredson & hirschi (1990) > based on social consensus, break law for lack self- control.
