SOC 1100 Chapter Notes - Chapter 8: Lgbt Social Movements, American Psychological Association, Pearson Education
Document Summary
In recent decades, homosexuality has become a growing topic in a society that was once taboo to speak of (ref. p. 192). As social dynamic and views shifted, homosexuality became more acceptable and thus, a rising norm among individuals. This has resulted in many individuals" finding comfort within their community to freely accept themselves and interact with other individuals without hiding their sexual identity. The particular aspect of sexuality can be analyzed by the social-conflict approach which views society as a place of inequality that produces conflict and change (ref. p. 16). At one point time, it was unspeakable to be gay. People viewed homosexuality as something dirty because it went against norms of that particular time, science and religion. This caused conflict within communities as homosexuals were marginalized and more than often, individuals hid their sexual orientation to be able to obtain the opportunities for a better life (ref. p. 193).
