Occupation is a major determinant of income, wealth, and power. Physicians, lawyers, and engineers, are ranked near the top on prestige while cashiers and janitors are ranked near the bottom. Education determines labour force participation, occupation, and income. Differences between men and women in similar jobs are minimal. Women have completed more year of schooling than men. Ancestry: most of the rich gained their position through inheritance. Race and ethnicity: higher average incomes for japanese, british and french vs. chinese, black, and aboriginal. Gender: women earn less income, accumulate les wealth, and have lower prestige than men. Defining class is difficult b/c of the relatively low level of status consistency.
