Although immigration is one of the defining features of the american experience, the surge of immigration since the 70"s was not seen even within us standards. There are over three times as many foreign-born residents. Most of the immigration has taken place in the 90"s. A third of all legal immigrants come from four countries: They have either entered or remained in the country without authorization. Illegal immigrants also known as undocumented workers perform many of the low-wage physically demanding jobs that legal immigrants tend to avoid. The treatment of workers described on page 245 is not considered legal. Undocumented workers are still protected by most us labor laws even if they are in the country illegally. It takes two forms: at the bottom of the occupational ladder are those from central america and the caribbean while at the top there are those from asia, europe and africa.
