Document Summary
He was probably one of the first to describe a theory of motivation. He says there are four different types of causes: Final: refers to the aim or purpose of motivated behavior. Formal: integrating the concept of motivation into models, hypotheses, or theories of behavior. Material: material of which things are made (brain) Hedonism: striving for the greater good (ex: declaration of independence) Socrates: claimed a person should follow a course of action for which pleasure needs to exceed pain. The only reason a person would not do so because he lacks complete knowledge. Democritus: both natural and good for persons to follow this course but not identify what was pleasurable or painful independent of a person"s behavior. Moderation to have greater pleasure in the long run. Moderation may require experiencing pain prior to pleasure. A person may endure immediate pain because longer lasting pleasure may be a consequence.
