PSYC 4440 Chapter Notes - Chapter 33: Sleep Onset Latency, Excessive Daytime Sleepiness, At War With Self
Document Summary
Children/adolescents spend an average of 40% of their day sleeping. When insufficient sleep is obtained their growth, development, cognitive functioning, performance, health, mood, and family functioning are all impacted. 25-40% experience some type of sleep problem fairly common, even in healthy kids. Disrupted sleep can often be associated with physical or psychiatric illness. How much sleep a child needs vs. how much he/she is currently obtaining. Insufficient sleep can contribute to poor emotion regulation, negative mood, increased behaviour problems, and a decrease in coping skills. Insufficient sleep manifests itself differently across the age span. Toddlers; become more overactive, teenagers; more moody/lethargic. In a 24 hour period most newborns will sleep 10-18 hours, premature infants may sleep longer. Sleep in short periods (45 minutes to 3 hours), no differentiation between night and day. Put infant to sleep on their back to reduce the risk of sids.
