Many diverse concepts and varying characteristics have influenced different descriptions of people with intellectual disabilities, depending on society"s views and situational influences during any given time period. The concept of intellectual disabilities has been fluid and elusive for a variety of reasons, not the least of which have been the influences of economic, social and political climates of various cultures throughout history. The earliest written reference to intellectual disabilities is dated 1552 bc. Human skulls dating to the neolithic age indicate crude brain surgeries were performed. Throughout history, political authority has also been a force in determining the lot of people with intellectual disabilities sometimes authority supported harsh treatment of individuals with disabilities, while at other times more humane approaches were in favor.
