Dying : primped and medicalized: primping of death use substitute terms instead of saying dying (ex. Expiration date, kicking the bucket: medicalization of death insulating physicians and bureaucrats from mortal realities, doctors are mortal and their job (giving out bad news) can be hard on them. The moment of death: is it vanishing: moment when life passes to death charged with meanings in past, each culture has different response to death (idea of banshee, anguish/loss etc. ) How aged people ended their lives in geriatric facilities. Traditional ideas about dying becoming less descriptive of today"s. Doctors distance self from patient death if see it as their failure. Dementia often present in last phase of life. Often person dies alone, family visits but isn"t there at time of death: negative emotions part of daily experience more likely to encounter life-threatening experiences and more likely to lose the battle, dying as transition.
