Document Summary

Psychology of death and dying chapter 3 notes. The death system: made up of people, places, times, objects, and symbols. Even the cat who eats cat food from those animals, and the people who purchase it. Times: memorial day, day of the dead, occasions for prayer, anniversaries (public or private) Objects: hearse, death certificate, taxidermy, obituaries, electric chair, weapons, noose, less obviously associated with death (have a purpose not death-related): cigarettes, automobiles, drugs. The way people distinguish their communication shows a lot about their underlying attitudes. Warnings and predictions: a core function of society is to protect its members by issuing warnings and predictions about life threats. Must decide what we are going to do about it. Disposing of the dead: not just disposal of physical parts; funeral and memorialisation as well, which tell us a lot about the overall stability and cohesiveness of a culture and what that society makes of death.
