Unit 05: stress and coping in sport & exercise. Nature of stress, stressors, and types of emotions associated with stress. Not all stress is harmful and to be avoided. Athletes need to be in their optimal emotional zone in order to best have "good" stress which is essential to attain the best performance. Distress = bad stress and it negatively influences the cognitive, emotional and physiological limits of the athlete, it must be anticipated and controlled. Emotions have core relationships between the athlete and the situation. Stress response = physiological, cognitive, affective and behavioural reactions when we are faced with heavy demands. Stress = an experience that is produced through a person-situation relationship that is perceived as taxing or exceeding the person"s resources. Stressors = external events, forces and situations that have the potential to be interpreted as stressful. Primary appraisal = an evaluation of what is at stake for a person in a situation.
