PSYC 3450 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Learned Helplessness, Peekaboo
Document Summary
John bowlby published an article describing the behaviour of 15-30 month olds who"d been separated from their mothers for long periods of time. Bowlby noted a 4th separation phase, permanent withdrawal from human. If a child"s separation from the mother is extremely prolonged or if they lose a series of temporary attachment objects (nurses, babysitters etc. ) Often become less interested in human contact. Become more egocentric as their attention shifts from human beings to toys or inanimate objects. Attachment: close emotional relationship between 2 people, characterized by mutual affection and a desire to maintain proximity\ Neonate: a newborn infant from birth -1month. There is not strong evidence that parents who haven"t had early contact w a newborn will later have difficulties establishing intimate ties. Secure attachments between infants and caregivers are not formed in the first few hours/days, they build gradually from social interactions that take place over months.
