PSYC 3330 Chapter Notes - Chapter 7: Prefrontal Cortex, Olfaction, Semantic Similarity
Document Summary
Semanic memory is general knowledge about the world while episodic memory is memory for events occurring at a speciic ime in a speciic place. There are important similariies between them: episodic memory oten involves semanic memory. Important diferences: there is no sense of conscious recollecion of semanic memories as there is with episodic memory. Episodic memory involves self-knowing while semanic memory is knowing. Separate systems awareness : there is typically more damage to episodic memory than semanic memory in brain damage, suggesing the two types are disinctly diferent from each other. Retrograde amnesia afects episodic memory up to a few years, but retrograde semanic memories remain relaively intact: there are also cases where semanic memory is severely damaged while episodic memory remains relaively intact. A progressive neurodegeneraive disorder characterized by gradual deterioraion of semaic memory. Is associated with damage to the anterior frontal temporal lobes.
