Document Summary

Maximum number of sequenially presented digits that can reliably be recalled in the correct order. Term applied to a range of complex memory span tasks in which simultaneous storage and processing is required. Requires 2 things: remembering what the items are, remembering the order in which they were presented. Memory is not limited by the number of items we can recall, but the number of chunks: chunking. The process of combining a number of items into a single chunk typically on the basis of long-term memory. Takes advantage of cues from prosody, the natural rhythms that occur in speech and that make its meaning clearer by separaing into coherent phrases the coninuous sequence of sounds that make up the normal speech stream. Despite being presented visually, errors were likely to be similar in sound to the item they replaced: ex. P would be replaced with v, not r: interpreted as a short-term memory store that relies on acousic code.
