Korsakoff syndrome: drinking too much, memory deficits, other cognitive functions preserved, still have difficulties with attentional control (memory, attention, or both?) Double dissociation: when two patient groups show opposite patterns of deficit (normal stm, impaired ltm; normal stm, impaired ltm) Problems: most brain damage affects more than one system, increasing complexity of models of memory. Converging operations: carrying out a whole series of experiments using different methods and different participant groups, all focussed on the same theoretical questions. Magnetic resonance imaging: detecting changes induced by a magnetic field, structural tractography, allows mapping of the important white matter bundles. Current is passed through a set of coils close to a participant"s head. Magnetic field which can polarize or depolarize depending on the underlying brain tissue. Electroencephalogram: device for recording the electrical potentials of the brain through a series of electrodes placed on the scalp. Complex pattern of activation across the whole brain.
