Document Summary

The goal of sampling is to collect a sample that represent a population. Two main types: random sample is one in which every member of the population has an equal chance of being selected into the study, convenience sample is one that uses participants who are readily available. Generalizability refers to resear(cid:272)her"s a(cid:271)ility to apply fi(cid:374)di(cid:374)gs fro(cid:373) one sample or in one context to other samples or contexts; also called external validity. Replication refers to the duplication of scientific results, ideally in a different context or with a sample that has different characteristics. Random selection is the ideal way to gather a sample from a population; random selection is almost never used. Random assignment is what is done with participants once they have been recruited into a study, regardless of how they got there; random assignment is frequently used. Inferential statistics use probability estimates based on sample data to decide about patterns in the population.
