Freud"s ideas and terminology are an important part of the history of psychology as well as the greater culture. Instincts: also known as trieb in german, we can think of impulses or instincts like a tension or excitation originating from the body. Two broad categories of instincts: eros is the life instincts and thanatos is the death instincts. Psychic energy of life instincts is called libido, and the most important to freud is sex. A freudian technique in which patients talk about whatever pops into their heads, following one thought to another, without trying to control it. One thought to the next may lead the patient to reveal unconscious thoughts.
