Form perception the process through which you manage to see the basic shape and size of an object. The process through which you identify what an object is. Essential when wanting to apply knowledge to the world. Crucial for learning, need recognition to combine bit information collected on different occasions. Reversible figure: people perceive it one way at first, and then another while the drawing is fully compatible with both perceptions. First we collect information about the stimulus so that we know what angle or curves are contained in the input. Second, we interpret this information, deciding how the form is laid out in depth. When looking at a stimulus, at first we may not recognize a part of it ( ex: letters hidden amongst shapes), but once we recognize that they are there, we immediately recognize them every time. Bottom up influences: influences coming directly from the stimulus. Recognize things through parts (ex: elephant from trunk)
