From day one, parents often call infant sons big guy and tiger and comment on the vigour of their cries, kicks and gasps. Daughters are more likely to be labeled as sugar or sweetie while being described as soft and adorable. Parents tend to use what is gender appropriate. Sex: a person"s biological identity: chromosomes, physical manifestations and hormonal influences. Gender: refer to a person"s social and cultural identity as male or female. One explanation centres on the biological differences between the sexes recall that the father determines the sex of the offspring. However, for a child to conform to societies, they must understand that they are a boy or a girl incorporating this into their self-concept. Gender typing: the process by which children acquire not only a gender identity but the motives, values and behaviors considered appropriate to their culture.
