Kin altruism: behaving in a way that benefits a genetic relative"s chance of survival at some cost to one"s own chances. Reciprocal altruism: acting in a way that benefits an unrelated individual at some expense, with the expectation that the recipient will return such assistance in the future. Cueing religious words can increase helping: people who are religious are more likely to engage in prosocial behaviour. People are nicely when it ensures the survival of their genes, which is then passed on. Your altruism might lead to your death but your child will survive so your genes will survive. Kinship selection: the idea that we"re more likely to help those we are genetically related to: explains why parents self-sacrifice. People help other to increase the odds that they will be helped by others.
