Self-schemas: refers to our memory, inferences and information about ourselves. Perceptual confirmation: we tend to remember concepts or see things that are consistent with our perception, attitudes or beliefs. Field independent: have a greater ability to identify a target figure and separate it from its larger background. Field dependent: have greater difficulty in identifying a figure that is embedded in a larger background but are better able to perceive the whole image as one holistic figure. Before you buy a car you read the latest issue of consumer reports then test drive several cars, evaluate their features and so on. We assume that if attractive people buy a particular car, we might become more attractive by engaging in this same behaviour. Similarity: research says your good friend is more similar to you than and athlete and therefore more persuasive. Credibility: sources who appear credible, meaning competent and trustworthy, are more persuasive than those who lack credibility.
