Empiricism - philosophical tenet that knowledge comes through experience. Knowledge comes from careful observation (after thinking about logical explanations) Determinism - belief that all events are governed by lawful, case-and-effect relationships. Psychologists - don"t need to believe each thought/behaviour/experience = determined by natural laws. But - recognize that behaviour is determined by both internal (ex: genes/brain chemistry) and external. Psych question - how environmental / genetic / physiological process influence behaviour. Doctors found parrerns that they had, that damage to different brain parts = different types of impairments (ex: vision / cognitive abilities!) First step :d --> linking brain-based injuries to certain changes in behaviour. 4 humours in body influenced health & personality! Blood --> sanguine! (impulsive / pleasure-seeking / charismatic) Yellow bile --> choleric (ambitious / energetic / aggressive) Black bile --> melancholic (independent / perfectionistic / introverted) Phlegm --> phlegmatic (quiet / relaxed / content with life)
