PSYC 1000 Chapter Notes - Chapter 10.2: Introjection, Object Permanence
Document Summary
Module 10. 2: infancy and childhood: cognitive and emotional development. Cognitive development: study of changes in memory, thought, and reasoning processes that occur throughout the lifespan. Piaget"s main interest was in how different ways of thinking and reasoning develop. Assimilation: conservative process, whereby people fit new information into the belief systems they already possess. Accommodation: creative process whereby people modify their belief structures based on experience. Girls can have short hair and boys can have long hair. Cognitive experience is based on direct, sensory experience with the world as well as motor movements that allow infants to interact with the world. Object permanence is the significant developmental milestone of this stage. Thinking moves beyond the immediate appearance of objects. The child understands physical conservation and that symbols, language, and drawings can be used to represent ideas. The ability to preform mental transformations on objects that are physically present emerges. The capacity for abstract and hypothetical thinking develops.
