PSYC 1000 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3.4: Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, White Matter, Grey Matter
Document Summary
Module 3. 4: windows to the brain: measuring and observing brain activity. Lesioning: technique in which researchers intentionally damage an area in the brain. This allows for consistent testing because brain damage caused from injuries will affect different parts of the brain affecting the research. Allows for the isolation of brain structures: ex. Rats were used to text how the hippocampus controls spatial ability. Test group with lesions on both sides of the hippocampus had trouble finding the platform in the morris water maze where rats with no lesions found the platform from memory. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (tms): procedure in which an electromagnetic pulse is delivered to a targeted region of the brain. Pulse interacts with ions around neurons in the affected area- this creates an affect similar to a brain lesion but does not cause damage: used to test various processes such as visual perception and arithmetic abilities.
