Asylum: residential facilities for the mentally ill. The medical model: sees psychological conditions through the same lens as western medicine tends to see physical conditions as sets of symptoms causes and outcomes, with treatments aimed at changing physiological processes in order to alleviate symptoms. To be normal means something different to everyone, beliefs, values, and lifestyle are culturally bound meanings to others it will look different. Normality changing between cultures causes problems for clinical psychologists, one possible solution is understanding appropriate cultural framework. Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders (dsm): a standardized manual to aid in the diagnosis of disorders: this was created for consistency across institutions. Dsm 5 difference: got rid of the 5 axis (1=clinical disorder, anxiety, adhd, or substance abuse, 5=global assessment of functioning) for separate categories for different disorders, new disorders were introduced (compulsive disorders are no longer considered anxiety disorders), and disorders were renamed (like intellectual disability instead of mental retardation)
