PSYC 1000 Chapter Notes - Chapter 11: Self-Determination, Ghrelin, Body Language
Document Summary
Motivation: concerns the physiological and psychological processing underlying the initiation of behaviors that direct organisms towards specific goals. Drive: a biological trigger that tells us we may be deprived of something and causes us to seek out what is needed. Homeostasis: a body"s physiological processes that allow it to maintain consistent internal states in response to the outer environment. Our need for food is influenced by all three of these and the satisfaction of food can also be due to how rewarding we find the food. We are hardwired to like some foods more than others. Our tongues have taste buds that are more sensitive to certain foods and that release endorphins and dopamine (why we like sugars and fats more than other foods) We crave fats and sugars more when we are stressed due to a higher release of ghrelin. Increasing the size of the portion makes people eat about 20% more.
