PSYC 1000 Chapter Notes - Chapter 14.2: Adrenal Medulla, Autonomic Nervous System, Sympathetic Nervous System
Document Summary
The physical responses to stressors were somewhat general, despite the fact that stress can come from a variety of sources that may be biological, cognitive or social in nature. Fight-or- ight response = a set of physiological changes that occur in response to psychological or physical traits. General adaptation syndrome (gas) = a theory of stress responses involving stages of alarm, resistance and exhaustion. A stressful event such as a shock, rst elicits an alarm reaction. Alarm consists of your recognition of the threat and physiological reactions that accompany it including increases in blood pressure, muscle tension, heart rate and adrenaline release. Resistance = an individual using his or her physical and mental resources to respond to the stressor in an appropriate way. Exhaustion = occurs when the stressful experience depletes your physical resources and your physiological stress response declines.
