Document Summary

Insight therapies = a general term referring to therapy that involves dialogue between client and therapist for the purposes of gaining awareness and understanding of psychological problems and con icts. Came with the development of psychoanalysis by sigmund freud and its evolution into psychodynamic therapies. Psychodynamic therapies = forms of insight therapy that emphasize the need to discover and resolve unconscious con icts. Freud hypothesized that much of our consciousness occurs at the unconscious level, outside of our conscious awareness. Many fundamental urges, such as sexuality, appetites and aggression, were thought to be constantly in uencing how we thing and behave, although we would not be explicitly aware of these processes. The true causes of our behaviour and thus or psychological issues, lie in the unconscious. People or not consciously aware of the contents of their unconscious. Freud and his associates came up with several methods they believed would help them access the mysterious unconscious realm.
