Document Summary

Asylums: residential facilities for the mentally ill. The hope of these was to shock person out of diseased state. Moral treatment became to become more popular (treating patients with kindness and letting them roam around) however there was still no effective treatments. Chlorpromazine worked wonders for mentally ill patients, and inpatients dropped by over. Mental health workers tend to focus on treating the symptoms directly and not helping people at a practical level. Mental illnesses are not the same as physical illnesses. Medical model: see psychological conditions through the same lens as western medicine tends to see physical conditions as a set of symptoms, causes, and outcomes with treatments aimed at changing physiological processes in order to alleviate symptoms. Medical model could be critiqued as being overly, narrow, more focused on cure than promoting wellness and helping people. The medical model has now begun to evolve, incorporating systems such as biological, psychological, and sociocultural into illnesses such as depression.
